The neighborhood watch volunteer who shot and killed Martin said the unarmed 17-year-old beat his head into the sidewalk several times, according to Sanford Florida Police. That information, according to officers, was leaked and surfaced in an Orlando Sentinel article Monday. Sanford police said the information released was not made public through an authorized source, but is consistent with the information provided to the State Attorney’s Office.
Investigators say the leak came from within the Sanford Police Department. Zimmerman has not spoken publicly about the shooting death and was never arrested. He told officers that the shooting was self-defense.
The Orlando Sentinel’s account says that “Martin asked Zimmerman if he had a problem. Zimmerman said ‘no’ and reached for his cellphone. Martin then said, ‘Well, you do now,’ and punched Zimmerman in the nose. Zimmerman fell to the ground and Martin got on top of him and began slamming his head into the sidewalk. Zimmerman began yelling for help.” A witness told authorities that it was Zimmerman crying for help, not Martin.
The acting Sanford police chief refused to answer questions relating to leaked information by the department.
