[UPDATED: WEDNESDAY JUNE 27TH 2012 @ 4:45 AM ET]
I was in shock last night as i covered The Colorado Wildfires from the studio here in Atlanta. You may say that wildfires burn every year out west and that’s just nature and that’s true but last night we witnessed something of “historic per portions”, according to officials in several news conferences last night in Colorado Springs.
The Waldo Fire had been burning since the weekend and fire crews thought they would have a good handle on it by Tuesday, at least to the point where it would not threaten the city limits of Colorado Springs. That all changed late Tuesday as the “firestorm” went rapidly over the mountain and was pushed down into homes with 65 mph winds from gusty thunderstorms!
32,000 people were asked to evac right away and only had minutes to get out as the smoke and fire got close. We watched Live last night as house after house went up in flames. Officials said that they were doing the best they could to fight the wildfires, but local residents were angry and wanted more action to be taken and wanted the federal government including troops to step in to fight the fires.
Another fire was threatening the Boulder area and “Pre” evacuation orders were sent out to hundreds in that area just north and west of the city limits. That fire had dyed down a little overnight but must be watched during the day today. That fire was reportedly started by a lightning strike.
