Dangerous & Life Threatening Heat will be moving into and across Georgia starting today but even more extream Friday into Monday! And right now, it could actually be cooler on the 4th of July than this weekend! Who would have ever thought 95 degrees would be a cool down!

I know it is summer and yes we’ve had heat waves before, but it has been a while since Atlanta & Athens has seen temps in the 100s! And thats the actual temp, not counting the heat index, that is expected to be from 105-115 in some spots across the state this weekend!

You should treat this heat wave this weekend as it were a TORNADO WARNING! This is a dangerous and life threatening situation! You could have a HEAT STROKE this weekend if you stay out in the heat for very long! The air-quality is expected to be poor, PLUS: This weather will cause and instant sunburn within minutes!

Here is some helpful advice from the National Weather Service on this Heat Wave!…

THE COMBINATION OF HOT TEMPERATURES AND HIGH HUMIDITY
WILL COMBINE TO CREATE A SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT ILLNESSES ARE
POSSIBLE.

TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS IF YOU WORK OR SPEND TIME OUTSIDE. WHEN
POSSIBLE…RESCHEDULE STRENUOUS ACTIVITIES TO EARLY MORNING OR
EVENING. KNOW THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION AND HEAT
STROKE. WEAR LIGHT WEIGHT AND LOOSE FITTING CLOTHING WHEN
POSSIBLE AND DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. CHECK UP ON RELATIVES AND
NEIGHBORS. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT LEAVE CHILDREN OR PETS UNATTENDED IN
VEHICLES!

TO REDUCE RISK DURING OUTDOOR WORK THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND
HEALTH ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDS SCHEDULING FREQUENT REST BREAKS
IN SHADED OR AIR CONDITIONED ENVIRONMENTS. ANYONE OVERCOME BY
HEAT SHOULD BE MOVED TO A COOL AND SHADED LOCATION. HEAT STROKE
IS AN EMERGENCY…CALL 911.

We MUST NOT forget about the elderly! Please check on them regularly this weekend! Make sure that they have cool air and plenty of water! If you know ANYONE that dos’nt have central air or no AC at all, please if you can, go out today and buy a cheap box fan for less tham $20. and give it to someone. It may not seem like much to you, but it would mean the world to them!

And please, DO NOT EVER leave a child in a car for more than a SECOND! Temps will rise extreamly quickly in a parked car to as high as 120 to 135 degrees within seconds! This will result in death within minutes!

Over 500 children have died in the US since 1998 due to heat realated deaths in cars, vans & trucks! More
