CHANNEL 1 ATLANTA ISSUES STATEMENT ON SOME WRONG INFO DURING TORNADO COVERAGE FRI NIGHT

{CHANNEL 1 ATLANTA} ATLANTA GA
[UPDATED: SATURDAY JUNE 1ST 2013 @ 12:05 AM ET]

As always here at Channel 1 Atlanta and its related networks including Storm Watch America, we make it a #1 priority to make sure the information we send out to the public is correct first and foremost.

On the evening of Friday May 31st 2013, during our coverage of a major Tornado Outbreak, we tweeted “2” bits of information that were wrong and as soon as we found out the information was wrong, we corrected it.

It all started with a report from one of our sources @breakingweather (ACCU Weather) that said,

Now ACCU Weather later said the report was not correct and retracted the story. There was a flood of information coming in to Channel 1 Atlanta that night from sources from all over the country as a Tornado Outbreak was underway. We believe we have the best sources from all over the country on our feeds as we follow only the best tv, radio, and reporters in the country. Because we stress to provide you the public the best and most accurate information that you deserve during an emergency, we have since deleted @breakingweather from our feeds.

Now please don’t get me wrong everyone makes mistakes, and mistakes were made on OUR behalf as well for tweeting that information. News is fluid during a situation like this. In the future, we WILL WAIT and find out more as we normally do, if we receive an information in the future that is in question.

There was one more incident during that same time of a tweet from a local tv station in St Louis MO of “Mass Casualties” at a Holiday Inn there. That reported was later retracted as well from the local tv station. We tweeted that one as well but quickly made a correction as soon as we found out.

In summary, we are sorry for ANY mis-information you may have got from us on that night. Our main goal was to alert the public of life threatening storms and we believe we done that. We are the first to say we are wrong and do better during the next big event. We have already corrected our sources, and hope you will continue as always for the most accurate and dependable news and weather information, as it happens.

Thank you,
David Dutton
